岛国 (dǎoguó) is Chinese for an island nation: 岛 (dǎo) means island, 国 (guó) means country. The compound is completely transparent and extends a simple pattern — add 国 to almost any geographic or cultural label and you get a country type: 大国 (dàguó, great power), 小国 (xiǎoguó, small state), 邻国 (línguó, neighboring country).
