What does 睡懒觉 (shuì lǎnjiào) mean in Chinese?

Chinese has a dedicated phrase for lying in on a day off: 睡懒觉 (shuì lǎnjiào), literally “sleep a lazy sleep.” The character 懒 (lǎn) means lazy or idle, and it slots between the verb 睡 (shuì, sleep) and its object 觉 (jiào, a sleep/nap). The built-in judgment — calling the extra rest “lazy” — makes the phrase more vivid than a neutral “sleep in,” with a hint of affectionate self-reproach.

In the clip, the speaker explains her daily routine: if she has work, she gets up; if not, 我不起床，我睡懒觉 (“I don’t get up — I sleep in”). The verb–object structure 睡觉 (shuì jiào, “sleep”) is separable in Chinese, so you can insert adjectives: 睡好觉 (shuì hǎo jiào, “sleep well”), 睡午觉 (shuì wǔjiào, “take a nap”). 睡懒觉 follows the same pattern — the inserted 懒 turns a nap into an indulgent lie-in.
