What does 朵 (duǒ) mean as a Chinese measure word?
In Chinese, every noun needs its own counter word. Clouds are counted with 朵 (duǒ) — “一朵云, 两朵云” (one cloud, two clouds). The same word counts flowers. Originally a pictograph of a flowering cluster, 朵 captures the idea of something soft, rounded, and loosely gathered. The clip counts stars with 颗 (kē), trees with 棵 (kē), and clouds with 朵 — three near-identical sounds, three different shapes.
This A1 video methodically rehearses the sky vocabulary and then drills measure words through counting: “天上有两朵云” (there are two clouds in the sky). The near-homophone trio — 颗 for small round objects like stars and seeds, 棵 for plants rooted in soil, and 朵 for soft gathered forms like clouds and flowers — is one of the first places Mandarin beginners discover that choosing the wrong counter makes a sentence sound wrong even when every other word is right.
