What does “arowwig” mean in Iraqi Arabic?

اروّق (arowwig) is the Iraqi Arabic verb for treating someone with kindness or relief, used here by a teacher promising her students an old-style sweets break. It comes from the root r-w-q (to settle, to relax) and gets reached for any time someone wants to give a small gesture of comfort, hospitality, or letting-off-the-hook.

Standard Arabic and other dialects have less specific equivalents, which is why اروّق feels distinctly Iraqi when you hear it. The clip also uses ألف عافية (alf afya, “a thousand health”), the universal Arab blessing for someone eating or finishing an effort. Together they make a small, recognizable Iraqi school memory.
