What does “يتزحزح” (yitZahzah) mean in Arabic?

يتزحزح (yitZahzah) means to budge, to shift even an inch. The word comes from the reduplicated root ز-ح-ز-ح, and that doubling is doing real work: the repeated syllable mimics the back-and-forth heaving of something that refuses to move. Standard Arabic dictionaries list it as tazaḥzaḥa; in Lebanese and broader Levantine speech it shortens to yitZahzah, and it turns up precisely when something is frustratingly, comically stuck.

In this simplified Lebanese retelling of The Giant Turnip, the farmer pulls and pulls — اللفت ما كان يتزحزح (“the turnip would not budge”) — and keeps calling in reinforcements: wife, granddaughter, dog, cat, mouse. Each time the same refrain: بعد ما تزحزح (“still wouldn’t budge”). By the fifth repetition the word has lodged itself in your memory almost as stubbornly as the turnip.
