What does “sallat al-muhmalat” (سلة المهملات) mean in Arabic?

سلة المهملات is the wastebasket, and the phrase is a small lesson in itself: سلة is a basket, and المهملات means “the neglected things,” from the verb أهمل, “to neglect.” So Arabic trash isn’t just trash — it’s what got neglected. The same phrase names the trash folder on every Arabic-language phone and computer, so you’ll meet it on screens as often as in classrooms.

In the clip, one student scolds another for tossing paper on the floor: يجب عليك أن تضعها في سلة المهملات — “you must put it in the wastebasket” — and warns that if everyone thought that way, the school would become مكاناً للنفايات, a dump. That gives you the register ladder: مهملات (neglected things), نفايات (waste, formal), and قمامة (garbage) — with dialects adding their own everyday word, زبالة.
