What does “al-hamdu lillah ala salama” mean in Arabic?

Across the Arab world, when someone returns from a trip, they’re greeted with الحمد لله على السلامة (al-ḥamdu lillāh ʿalā s-salāma) (“praise God for the safety”). It’s the standard return-from-travel greeting, said the same way English-speakers say “welcome back!” or “glad you made it.” The expected reply is “الله يسلمك” (allāh yisalmak), “may God keep you safe,” closing the exchange in one breath.
