What does “tuwuffiya” (توفي) mean in Arabic?

The mother in this clip says her son توفى — the gentle, respectful way Arabic says someone passed away, used where مات (“died”) would sound blunt. The word’s root و-ف-ي means to fulfill or pay in full — وفى بوعده is “he kept his promise.” In the passive, تُوفّي pictures a life as something God receives back complete: not ended, but taken in full.

The clip is quietly moving: she has come to perform an عمرة on her late son’s behalf, and her comfort is the phrase عند الله أرحم الراحمين — “with God, the Most Merciful of the merciful.” Around توفى travels a set of condolence formulas worth knowing: الله يرحمه (“God have mercy on him”) after mentioning the deceased, and البقاء لله to the bereaved.
