What does “Maisonettewohnung” mean in German?
On her apartment tour, she points at a big hole in the floor and a staircase and says that’s because it’s a “Maisonettewohnung.” She’s not bragging — she even jokes about almost falling down the stairs. The word just means her flat covers two floors, so she climbs her own indoor staircase instead of stepping into a building hallway to reach the next level.
She says: “Und zwar ist hier eine Treppe, weil das ist eine Maisonettewohnung.” — “There’s a staircase here because this is a two-floor flat.” The word comes from French and means “little house.” Germans use it for any flat that spans two floors inside one building. More examples: - “Wir suchen eine Maisonettewohnung.” — “We’re looking for a two-floor flat.” - “Die Maisonette hat eine Treppe ins Schlafzimmer.” — “The maisonette has a staircase up to the bedroom.” It sounds fancy in listings, but really it just tells you the flat has its own indoor stairs. You’ll meet it most often in rental ads and home tours.
