What does “se replier” mean in French football?

Se replier means to fold back — and on a pitch it is the verb for players dropping deep to defend, what English coaches call tracking back or falling back. The reflexive image is bodily: the team folds in on itself to close the space behind it. You hear it in match talk alongside revenir (come back) and travailler la défense (work on the defense) whenever the point is staying compact and not leaving gaps for the opponent to run into.

Beyond football the verb is everywhere: an army se replie (retreats), and a folding chair or pocket knife is pliant or se replie. The shared idea is folding inward to a smaller, tighter shape — which on the field is exactly the defensive shell a coach wants before a final.
