What does “bruiter” mean in French?

Bruiter comes from bruit (“noise”) and means to add sound effects to a silent image. English calls the craft “Foley” after the American sound artist Jack Foley; French calls the person who does it a bruiteur. The verb has no neat one-word English equivalent: in French film school it’s a single, normal verb you can conjugate.

In this Mira workshop, kids in Alsace are handed family Super-8 reels from the 1950s and asked to bruiter them: bang shoes on wood for footsteps, splash water for rowing, run pre-recorded cigales under the summer scenes. The whole exercise sits inside France’s deep public-archive culture, where amateur cinema is treated as heritage.
