What does “the world is your oyster” mean in English?

the world is your oyster
Idiom for freedom and opportunity
You have many choices and chances — everything is open to you.

When someone says “the world is your oyster,” they mean you can do or become anything you want. The image comes from an oyster shell, which may hold a pearl inside — something valuable hidden until you open it. Shakespeare wrote the phrase around 1602, but the meaning has changed since then. Today it sounds warm and encouraging. A teacher, coach, or parent might say it to a young person who is starting something new.

In the clip, a cat behaviourist ends her TED talk on puzzle feeders by saying: “the world is your oyster, and you’re only limited by your imagination.” She means: once you understand the basic idea, you can invent your own solutions without any help. Shakespeare’s original line — from The Merry Wives of Windsor (c.1602) — was sharper: “Why then the world’s mine oyster, which I with sword will open.” The character said it to show he would take what he wanted by force. That angry, forceful meaning is gone from the modern version; today the phrase is positive and kind. Related forms you may hear: “life is your oyster,” “London is your oyster” (used in a famous Transport for London ad), or “the world was their oyster” when talking about someone in the past who had great freedom.
