What does “a drop in the ocean” mean in English?
Most people use “a drop in the ocean” to mean something is too small to make a difference. In this clip, a psychologist uses the same phrase in a new way. She says each tiny moment of joy is one drop. It does not matter by itself. But add a drop every day, and over time the whole feel of your life can change. Small things count more than we think.
The psychologist explains why you should still do small enjoyable things even when you feel low: “Each time you choose to do something that could bring you pleasure, it’s like a tiny drop in the ocean. And in this moment, you tell yourself, there’s no point because it won’t make a huge difference. And by itself, it doesn’t. But when you add in another one tomorrow, and another one the next day... over time, it changes the feel of things.” In most everyday situations, the idiom is negative. “We raised £200 for the flood victims, but it’s a drop in the ocean compared to what they need.” American English uses the same idea with “a drop in the bucket.” Both mean a contribution so small it barely counts. Here the psychologist keeps the image but changes the direction: small drops do not become useless just because they are small. They still fill the ocean, one by one. The same words, a completely different feeling — worth noticing next time you hear this phrase.
