What does “a pick-me-up” mean?
A pick-me-up is a small thing — a drink, a snack, a short walk — that gives you energy or makes you feel better. You use it as a noun: “I need a pick-me-up” or “That coffee was a nice pick-me-up.” The phrase comes from the verb “pick up,” meaning to raise or improve something. Here, “up” is the key part: energy goes up, mood goes up.
In the clip, the food vlogger tries a $12 strawberry matcha drink and says it “was a nice pick me up.” She means the drink gave her a small boost of energy in the middle of a long day of eating. You can use pick-me-up for almost anything: a favourite song, a short nap, a sweet snack, or a chat with a friend. It always means something simple that makes you feel more awake or happier. “A pick-me-up” is the noun form — the set phrase for the thing itself (the snack, the drink, the walk). The verb “pick up” can also mean to improve someone’s mood or energy: “That coffee really picked me up” is correct and natural. So both forms exist — just remember that the thing you reach for is “a pick-me-up.”
