What is a Dutch “binnenvaartschip”?

A binnenvaartschip is a Dutch inland-shipping vessel built to haul cargo (containers, sand, gravel, grain, fuel) along the country’s dense network of rivers, canals, and hoofdvaarwegen. The Netherlands runs the largest inland-shipping fleet in the EU, with thousands of binnenvaartschepen moving freight that would otherwise go by truck. Many vessels are owner-operated and double as floating homes for the captain’s family, who live on board in a roef (the cabin section). It’s a uniquely Dutch profession with multi-generation skipper families.
